Piano Tiles 2™ 3.1.0.1132

Thanks for the addiction

I remember playing Piano Tiles sometime last year I think. The game was fairly engaging but it felt a bit underdeveloped. Now to my surprise, I find Piano Tiles 2 to be a fully fledged app with everything from life points and crystals to challenges, charts and special offers.

For those who don't know Piano Tiles 2 is a sequel to Piano Tiles (or Don't Touch the White Tiles as it was formerly called). The game is about forcing you to put some effort into listening classical and modern piano pieces. Actually, "listening" is not exactly the right word. Although you're not exactly playing the piano, you are setting the tempo. Here's what I mean:

Piano Tiles 2

Similar to games like the classic Guitar Hero, you will be following four sliding bands while hunting and tapping on all black tiles that show up on them. The frequency at which you tap will determine how well the song pacing is. This only has to do with your personal enjoyment. I must emphasize on the enjoyment part. Piano Tiles 2 contains a great selection of pieces from classical composers like Debussy, Chopin, Bach and many more. If you're a fan of classical music, you'll be in heaven while playing. If not, well, I'd wager you'll start appreciating classical music a bit more.

Gameplay has also evolved since Piano Tiles 1. Besides simple tiles, there are also sliding tiles of varying length. These must be tapped just as soon as the other ones, but as long as you hold your finger on them they will count as multiple taps and contribute to the quality of the play-over. The latest addiction are the diagonal sliding tiles, which, as you might have figured out, require that you slide the finger in order to keep it within its boundaries.

A song is played through once in order to get you accustomed with the tile setup. After reaching the end though, it will switch to Infinite mode and continue at an ever increasing speed. This is a chance to get a high score and win music notes and special rewards. For example, at this time you'll find eggs laying around. Tapping them may grant a special puzzle piece to complete the Easter challenge that's on right now.

Piano Tiles 2

There's also a strong metagame aspect. As Piano Tiles 2 is a freemium, there are three currencies that you use in order to keep playing and enjoy enough diversity (not the cultural kind). Lives, music notes and crystals, are required to play and purchase new songs. So you won't focus on playing right just for the music. Although, to be fair, I very well forgot about points and whatnot on different occasions while playing.

Conclusion

I rarely play freemiums for more than half an hour, but I think I'll keep Piano Tiles 2 on my phone, despite the serious storage space problem that it's experiencing right now. The sound is great and I thoroughly enjoy discovering and unlocking new songs and challenges.
